SUSTAINABLE MINE CAMPS
How Barrick, Minera Casale and BHP Billiton, Minera Escondida, goes to sustainable Mine Camps?
The LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major Renovations rating system has 6 categories each one with a specific number of Pre-requisites and Credits. Achievement of Pre-requisites is mandatory while credits are optional, but the project needs to obtain a minimum of 40 points, through credits achievement, to get LEED Certification. This study presents Cerro Casale´s 3400 Operations Camp and Escondida Concentrate Transport, ECT Camp for LEED Certification feasibility study. To achieve LEED Certification, the buildings must be “permanent”, because of this only the Operation Camp area can be LEED certified.
The feasibility study will focus on two options. The first one is the certification of the whole building. For this option, Cerro Casale´s 3400 Camp and ECT Camp LEED Certification can be achieved through “LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major Renovations” rating system as a residential building (Dormitories) as an Non-Residential (Rest of the building). It’s important to note that in order to achieve Cerro Casale´s 3400 Camp and ECT Camp LEED certification, this rating system require that residential buildings must be 4 floors minimum. This means that at least 60% of all bedrooms buildings must have at least 4 floors.
This requirement it’s in LEED 2009 Green Building Rating System for New Construction and Major Renovations Guide, and says: “LEED for New Construction was designed primarily for new commercial office buildings, but it has been applied to many other building types by LEED practitioners. All commercial buildings, as defined by standard building codes, are eligible for certification as LEED for New Construction buildings. Examples of commercial occupancies include offices, institutional buildings (libraries, museums, churches, etc.), hotels, and residential buildings of 4 or more habitable stories.”
The second option is to consider only the boulevard´s portion for certification, without residential buildings. We are currently evaluating the possibility of certified only de boulevard area. This could be difficult because LEED requires that any building pursuing certification must be certified in its entirety. “The LEED rating systems were designed to evaluate complete buildings and spaces in fixed locations. Partial buildings or spaces are unsuitable for LEED Certification” (Supplemental Guidance to the Minimum Program Requirements, Revision 2). However there are some exceptions that are being evaluating.
After the evaluation we can conclude that the key strategy to achieve LEED certification for both Camps, are related to Energy savings and Renewable Energy implementation. With these strategies, described in this document, doing a series of modifications at project level and management measurements and meeting the above requirements for each option, it is possible to get LEED Certified certification level for both cases.
